The story so far revolves around a highschool boy, Kanda-kun, and his housemates who vary in what talents they have. He’s in a special dorm for kids that are basically geniuses in their fields of talent but are considered special cases. Apparently he’s only in this dorm because he doesn’t want to abandon the cats he’s found and has to live there until he decides to find homes for them.
However things get interesting, yes more interesting than his one female housemate sleeping in his bed in her underwear and proclaiming they’ve done lewd things out his window. A girl, the niece of the dorm head, is coming to live at Sakurasou so she can work on her art and attend school.
This girl, Mashiro Shiina, is quite the special case. She’s extremely talented but can’t take care of herself. Kanda gets volunteered to take care of her and he has his work cut out for him. She also throws herself into her work, pulling numerous all nighters trying to finish it. Apparently Hikari, Kanda-kuns first cat, doesn’t much like Mashiro yet.
Next we have Misaki Kamiigusa. She’s the resident anime artist who is on her way to becoming a profession animator. She’s a 3rd year and has a huge crush on Jin Mitaka, the resident playboy. She’s very hyperactive and creative.
Now we have Nanami Aoyama, the childhood friend. She has a crush on Kanda. She works odd jobs before and after school. Her goal is to become a voice actress. She’s cute and her reactions to the numerous antics caused by the residents of Sakurasou are amusing.
Now we have Jin Mitaka. He’s the resident playboy who has feelings for Misaki but doesn’t have the guts to tell her yet. He’s a script writer and his goal is to become good enough to write for Misaki’s anime.
Ryūnosuke Akasaka, the shut in. He rarely ever leaves his room, has not yet in the first few episodes. He communicates via a computer program Maid-chan and also the houses chat network they have setup for one another. I don’t know much about this guy except that he’s rather helpful when it’s needed.
Chihiro Sengoku she is the dorm teacher at Sakurasou and Mashiro’s aunt. She’s flirty but has a decent head on her shoulders when it comes to the kids. She manages to con Kanda-kun into being Mashiro’s caretaker while she lives there. Not too much info on her yet as there hasn’t been too much development on her part. But she’s a pretty cool teacher.
This anime is, as the title states, unexpectedly good. It is not a harem anime, which I’m glad, but has a couple of love stories developing in it. Have to say right now my fave character is Mashiro and Kanda isn’t half bad either, his embarassments amuse me. The character development is pretty well paced and the story is good. So far this season a couple of anime that are good and 20+ episodes long, this is one of them. The other that I know of right now is Little Busters. I’ll get to that one over the weekend probably.
